Study Task 08 - SB2 - Pitching your ides / further developments from Feedback

From the feedback which I received i decided to develop some of the feedback was given, in some of the feedback I was given It was said i should try incorporate the idea of modernist and the posters which were created, so to do this i changed the logo to make it look more modernist by influencing its shape with other shapes, this effect is popular when researching modernist art. I think that this idea work well due to the type being functional & modernist linking it to the posters.
I then wanted to ad some of the background of the posters in to link the two together, i did this by cropping one of the images of the poster down. This idea creates texture and diversity, its also a traditional screen printed method in the background which connects to the idea of the company exclusively wanting traditional artists. Overall I am happy with this as a final out come as it stands out, traditional, clear, and modernist.

Below is another development which I carried out from our group critique some people said i should at buttons so you don't have to scroll to the top of the page again to look at another page. To do this I did the same idea as the first page and added a button at the bottom saying 'Back to the top', because of this insightful input from the group critique it has developed the website into to something that communicates better.  Overall I am pleased with the feedback and think both the logo, and websites redevelopment has worked well and has answered my conditions.

Study Task 08 - SB2 - Pitching your ides / further developments - development

Introduce your brief (design problem) to your peer and pitch each of your three prototype solutions.

Cop essay Question:

What effect has technology had on the design process within Graphic design over the last 25 years?

Your main idea as a whole:

In my essay a common topic which is mentioned is the lack of creatives using tradtional methods in there work, because of the age of the new digital technology, from research & the writing of the essay i have been intrigued by the idea of trying to bring traditional design methods back into modern today society.

The idea:  To create a buisness/company that promotes tradtional work, or work that include tradtional methods in the process.

The company:

The company is rhetorically a  a group of collectives who are passionate about traditional methods of design such as screen printing, letterpress, lino printing etc., we feel that since the introduction of the Apple mac that design has undergone a huge change meaning that designers now create everything digitally and are forgetting about the old love for traditional methods.

The objective will be to create a website to remind young creatives, company's buisnesses, and profeshionals how tradtiional methods are still intresting and if anything more interesting! Technology is taking over the deisgn indusrty and is becoming harder and harder to be unique with art work, now we have google the idea of theis company is to make that change.

What this website will include: This website will post work that has been emailed in by young proffeshionals, students, universities, colleges, company's and buisnesses that use tradtional methods that either influence their designs or create their designs in some way! It will also host indutions to things such as: Screen printing, lino printing, letter press, to give people who are unexperianced in these areas a chance to learn. This website will also have a creative chat, as understood in research found creatives who are trying to research out to profeshionals find it difficult to get replys, this chat whch will be created helps creatives connect with eachother, from this they will have networking oppertunities.

To advertise the company posters have been created in a modernist style to get more people intrighued about the website, these posters use a mixture of digital and tradtional design. Inspirational quotes which have been included in my essay which have been placed on the poster designs also, these posters are to encourage designers.

a) how each resolves the design problem:

Posters

  • Posters have been tradtional printed & also include digital elements
  • The posters have been created in a modernist style which links back to my essay. The modernist style is also simple this reason is because during my reserach i found that modernist art work is simple itself, and is clearer to understand.
  • They have kept a constant theme throughout them all making them look more profeshional
  • The posters link with the website being in a traditional modernist style
Website

  • Relating back to research i found that websites that best communcated were simple and clear, so I Ftried to keep a similar theme keeping it symplystic
  • From research i found bright colour was an eye catcher so added a bright colour.
  • From research I also found that on the first page welcoming page of sites that there was either an image or video that drew peoples attention, so i decided to add a large scale image to draw attention.
  • The image choice in which was used is collage of imagery, from research i found that sites made everything digital that they posted on there site so i wanted the site I was creating to look different right from the start.
  • From research i found that companys and buinsess would be more popular if they hosted events, and had good reviwes, so i figured it would be a clever idea to include these into the site.
  • Hosting inductions for people who are egar to learn shows the consideration of people who are intrigued about tradtinal methods, and bringing it back to life.
  • I considered the typeface from research i know i needed something bigger and bolder.

b) your design decisions,

Difficulties

As a designer i've always found it hard to create logos that are innotive and this is something that i continue to work on a creative, so through this process I am looking to improve my logo/branding designs skills, to create more innotive, meanigfull logos.

I found screen printing difficult, screen printing isnt something ive done loads of but its something that i am deeply inrigued by, becuase i've noticed my lack of skill but enjoyment in this process, I decided to join a screen printing and woodblock course for over summer to expland my knowlege.

d) any distribution considerations.

From what i found in my research, for distribution I needed to make my finals profeshional, realistic, eye catching and unique and I believe that i have managed to do this so far.

Feedback

During this assighnment i have asked for constant feeback on my practical work to help influence the final outcome:

  • Your website and posters have a good mix of traditional and digital
  • Include the menu bar in other sections of your page so you dont have to keep scrolling to the top of the page.
  • Great use of space and imagery
  • Great vareity lots of choice
  • Try influencing the pink colour more into you posters just to give a stronger link between posters and website, maybe include the logo on the posters also, overal great work.
  • Colour combination works well
  • Try and do a mockup of the creative chat

Study Task 9 :Production / Distribution / Reception: Digital or traditional?

Considertations undertsaking this project

  • During this project i have unertaken and considered young designers and the genreal public carrying out a survey to understand the stigma behind graphic design and is so call 'Digital' ways of working, the responses from this survey have influenced the design decisons i have choosen to go forward with during my written essay and practical work.
  • The creation of my essay has heavily influenced my practical work due to the research which has been taken, looking at, other designers who have a tradtional working pracitce, theorists who have the same ideas of technology taking over industry such as Steven Heller.
  • I've considered the target audiance throughout this project out lining on many occasions that young proffeshionals are the main target audiance as there the one that can inhance the design industry future.
  • I've considered tradional artists that are being slowly forgotten about, and considered ways of making it possinble to bring tradtional design back to life.
  • I've considered the layout of my practical work and the typefaces and typesetting to connect with my target audiance, producing a clear, simple, intriguing, eye catching designs.
  • I've also considered the modernists approach of working with tradtional methods linking to the essay, and the ways of working.
  • I have taken into consideration other campaigns and advertising which have influenced my design decisons such as stefan sagmeisters practical work.
  • I've also considered the difffernces between digital and tadtional producing methods & the expensis and prices difference.
  • I've also taken into consideration feeback from piers who have helped correct work and who have made my work better and more relevevant to the subject.
  • I have carried out crits with piers and worked in groups to develop innotive ideas and developments.
  • I have considerd the failures and sucess's of my practical experimenets and learnt form them to develop the failures to sucesses
  •  In  summary with all these points im overal pleased with my outcomes and essay, I have found the subject matter in which i choose very interesting and insightful, I've learnt numerous things because of this and becaue of the high interest of this subject I'm interested in researching further into this subject matter.
  •  If I were to carry out this assighnment again I would, take more time and care looking for a variety of resources such as books, blogs and email more artits and profeshionals and theorists, to help get a publics opinion to widen my knowledge and understanding, this is something which I will take into consideration in future assighnments.

Studio Brief 3: Presentation & Proposal

Question choice: To what extent do Technological developments in production and distribution impact on Graphic Design ?

Research

Report (Research)

The objectives of the report were to provide an overview of current knowledge on the theme of digital transition and the impact of new technology on the arts in order to suggest how changes in the arts and society brought about by digital technologies affecCanadian public arts funders. A preliminary version of the report was presented to a CPAF professional development meeting of Executive Directors on March 10, 2011.

The electronic, networked and interactive natureof the digital world has
a significant impact on the arts. Special significance must be placed on the impact of networks and interactivity, as they open up new possibilities for dissemination and public engagement with artwork. The digital world is not static and is continuing to experience very rapid development.

At the moment, attention is focussed on the impact of social media which
allow for the creation and exchange of user generated content and provide a structure for people to get organized, exchange and collaborate.

Social media can have an impact on the arts from at least three different perspectives: helping to bring audiences to performances and to artworks by matching art to people who are looking for it, providing a platform to create art and carry on dialogue and debates around communities of interest and giving organizations tools to listen to the public and build arts awareness.

At the moment, the majority of applications to arts funders from artists and arts organizations continue to be for artwork that is not heavily influenced by digital technologies, but interest in using these technologies has been growing very rapidly in recent years. Artistic disciplines and practices have different dimensions in their relationship to digital technology.

There are art forms that exist because of technology (digital arts practices and film, video) and art forms that are influenced by technology (new distribution means for music, ebooks in publishing, live performing arts). This study looks at all of these areas and does not focus on digital arts.

250 word introductory statement/rational

The objectives of this essay are to provide an overview of current knowledge on the theme of digital transition and the impact of new technology on the arts to suggest how changes in the arts and society brought about by technologies affect. This essay is an investigation which shall discuss how graphics designers work now, compared to how they used to work. Firstly, a short study of the origins of computers will be shown, and a brief history of how computer generated design concept was developed. I shall consider what exactly the role of the graphic designer is and the different and varied ways in which technology is used within it. Also, the nature of ‘graphic designer today’ will be studied and compared with the areas of graphic design in previous eras. Secondly, a study shall be made into what different technologies which are used in design and what these different technologies are. This essay will explore how these technologies are used and what benefits there are from using them over traditional and established methods. Thirdly, there shall be discussion about why graphic designers need or think they need technology and if there is merely a want for technological advances.

  1.  “ Because of the technology, we have the opportunity to become really important. We don’t need publishes anymore to do this. Just look at the Web designers, they can single-handedly reach the world eventually with full-motion video and stereo sound. We can do this for free; we can all do it at home, not only designers, but also everybody else in the world. So I am exited by this because I am hoping that people are going to be serious enough to not be constantly in search of something that’s just cool, but to be in search of ideas that can eventually begin to fill these huge empty vessels of technology”  Steven Heller and Elinor Pettit
  2.  “…..a couple of things bother me. One is the extent to which technology has evolved. The evolution of technology has been tremendous. I’m not computer-literate at all. And at the risk of being thought an old fogey, I mistrust what computers do to ideas. But given the impact of computers within the design world, the impact of computers on photography, the impact on the Web, I think that there has been a really fundamental sea change, a kind of shift of the critical mass.” Steven Heller and Elinor Pettit

Studio Brief 2: Finals

Final Website click on this link: https://digitalortradition.wixsite.com/mysite

Website video poor quality:

Overall I am pleased with my outcomes, researching this topic has helped me gain knowledge of the design industry today which is much needed for a  young creative such as myself. The outcomes fit the criteria that i set out to aim for:

  • Appeal to the target audience (From critiques)
  • Use traditional methods
  • Unique
  • Clear
  • Functional
  • Simple
With this project I've had difficulties, one being the creation of the logo as logo design is not one of my strong points but its something i'm slowly starting to work and get a grasp of, another would be screen printing, due to my little experience in screen printing i found it very temperamental but did enjoy working practically in my hands, it is because of this new method I've learnt that I've signed up to screen printing and wood block printing courses for summer to expand my knowledge with this method.

If I were to carry out this assignment again I would take more time and care screen printing & be more experimental and maybe introduce letterpress or another traditional method. I would also experiment more generally to get a wider a variety of ideas which could possibly improve the final outcomes. Overall I have enjoyed studying this subject and feel i've come away learning knowledge, it is because of this brief I will be studying a question which is similar for my dissertation.

Studio Brief 2: The website

The Website

These are some sketches I did of the website from research I new that I wanted to create a website which was easy to use and to function with. This website had to be different to the others, as in my research i found they based most of there website around digital outcomes, i want this website to base it round traditional, and only include digital outcomes which use practical methods to create there designs.  To do this I first started  by sketching out ideas. I didn't want the website to cram in to much information as it can put a customer off & turn them away.

For the start of the website I new I wanted something eye catching that would intrigue a creative, so i figured either a large piece of text or a large image would best suit this theme. I also want to link in the poster designs with this website, I thought that i could possible combine the poster within the logo design and colour influences.

Through this sketching i knew everything i didn't want, but wasn't sure what I did want in the website, all i knew is that i want some clear, eye catching, attractive & simple, to help me figure out what i wanted I carried out some extra research into other websites.

These are some of the websites which I found: what I found in common with them all is that they were all really simple however they were very flat, but because of the use of colour it brightens the sites up and makes them more eye catching and visually pleasing, I will take colour consideration in to the designs of my website. What i also noticed is that they are all very much typebased to i think the reason for this is because it makes the websites clearer and easier to understant.

These are some logo designs i started to come up with, I choose to digtialy create the logo as i thought it would transfer better when it came to making t-shirts and clothing in the future.

As a desginer i struggle to actually create logos its always been a difficult task for me and i wouldnt count it as one of my strong astributes as a designer, but its something that I'm continuing working on.

The first design below I decided to use the same typeface as I did on the poster designs as i thought it would look better as a series and link together, linking the posters and websites will also look more prefeshional, therefore attract more proffeshionals etc.

From the posters which i created due to the feedback that i was given I was advised to add brighter colour so I decided to take the colour from the poser and incoroporate it into the backgorund of the logo design, I then overlayed it with the texture from one of the other posters, to try give it a more textures, hand rendered look. Unfortunately I find that this logo design is particulaly unsuccessful, the reason for this is becuase the logo looks childish, due to the background and doesnt look clean cut enough to be a logo design.

This is antother similar experiemtation to one above this is a screenshot from when i was changing the colour, obviously we can see here how it doesnt work because of legibility.

From the other two designs I learnt that I needed to scrap the logo down and keep it simple for legibility and transferable reasons, so i decided to base this logo design purely on type. From research I found that most posters and logos are purely type based the reason for this is because type is easy to understand, and communicates immedietaley to the target audiance which is what the artist is looking for.

To carry out this experiment similar to the above experiemtation, I used the colour pink linking to the posters previously created,  but to aslo make the text stand out. I then also used the same font Bebas Neue, and choose to duplicate the layer, which overlaps the design and moved it around slightly. This effect creates an illusion almost but it's elso fairly eye straining when looking at it for long periods of time. However it is an eye catching simple design. Unfortunately I don't think that this will work for a logo design because it doesnt link the the posters which have been created enough therefore it would make the website seem errelevant.

This is another experimentation similar to the image above, this image again shows me moving the typeface around.

From past experimentation I found that I neeeded to link the poster desings and the website together more clearly so they look like there in the same group for designs, to do this i cropped some of the poster image and then overlayed the pink colour and added on the Bebas Neue text, descriptively this is good outcome, however visually its satisfactory, because of this i would rate this logo design unsucessful.

Slowly the experimentation which has been carried out is getting better, in the following experimentation below i've decided to scrap the pink background and make the poster design visually clear, whilst adding the pink colour to the text rather than to the background, keeping the text in the same form. This logo design works best out of the logos as it has answerd the requirements that are needed for the website and company as whole such as: Legible, Links, Traditional and pleasing. Overal I am happy with these logo experiments however i'm aware how limited the logo designs are and i shoud of experimented with more typefaces and fonts and possibly of even created my own.  This is a learing curve which I will take in to future projects.

From experimenting with the logo designs and website sketches i then began to create a website piecing together the things I had found during my research process.

I Began by adding text into the website to outline the main areas of the website such as catorgies: Screen print, mono print, digital, Motion graphics etc. I choose to choose a differnt font which was simlar to the one used in the logo, becase I felt for the website it needed to be bolder to stand out more, so I used the font Ariel Black to create this look. From research I found the eye catches when turning on websites are images or videos, from learning this I decided to use an image from a 1st year mini brief i did, which was a tradtional college, which also used the old fashioned felt tip pens. The reason for the use of this is image is becasue i want the website to be more tradtional based than digital based so to stand out from the others I want the image to be something unique, so as first welcoming page this works.

However when it comes to the logo I am still not settled as ive mentioned earlier im not confident when it comes to designing logos, and regretingley i left it last minute to create the logo, the logo will be a constant progression which I will work on till the end of the project. The main trouble with the logo is that it doesnt match the body type for the website page, but also the posters dont use the same body type so I will have to change and edit the type.

Previoulsy I have discussed that I wanted to keep the site very much about traditional art work so for this I've created buttons which you can click on saying eg ' Mono printing' so you can click into it which should take you to another page showing other creatives work that they have sent to be posted. This is one of the main features of the page, this page is all about commincating and awerness/networking or profeshionals etc who egar to learn off eachother so having the links to the be able to do this will help creatives do this.

In this slide, you can see images of pepoles work which is involved, some of this work is mine to show examples, and some is off students of leeds college of art who I asked to submit for this project. The submissons of some of the work makes you relalise how talented creatives are and how under appreciated designers are today, it just shows that creatives dont put there work out there enough or if they are there putting them on the wrong sites, becuase i personally have not seen a fair amount of work to these standards on other designs websites in past. This is what inspired me to carry out this task.

The company also would host events to have talks & exhibitons to let other creatives network with eachother to help build there portfolio or to teach them something new. We would also host inductions into screen printing and tradtional methods to help show deigners how to create tradtional art without the need of the computer, this is a major important factor as relating back to my essay i found that a lot of creatives are lacking in the knowledge of knowing tradtional methods and because a computer is so easy to work they just follow back to digital methods, In the essay i discuss how the only way of going back to tradtional times is to teach the new up coming creatives but its also to give the older creatives a chance to learn what they havent had chance to, this is why, this as a company has decided to do that.

This image above also has reviews of the response rate with emails as it shows and gives confidence to custmers, alot of designers today find it difficult to connect with proffeshionals cause they dont have time or think there quesitons are pointelss but with this site the creative world is your oyster and you can email anytime. Another idea for this website is also to have a live creative chat where creatives can just openely talk to eachother, this would create networking opertunities.

Above is images of a possible instagram page which could be made up. From research I found that many young creatives such as myself have all turned to instagram rather than facebook. Instagram has many links to design firms that are a must need to follow, so linking the instgram with the website is a wise choice, to get more custmers and to get buisness involved.

Identifying yourself is a major important part of being a creative, you need to identify what makes you unique as a designer, what aspects of design are your strong qualities, sucess isnt from being the same its from being unique and thinking out the box. Identifying yourslef as creative is by no means easy but its a start to finding your path to your future.

Something which i have identified for myself during this project is the love of practical design & screenprinting, from this i have gained a passion for trying to show others how practical design can make there practice better. Because of this I've decided to make this website offical and as a part of my ppp I will be developing this assighnment to a higher proffeshional standard.

Overal I am delighted with my website outcome for a company idea as i've previously discussed I will work on logo design as a designer as that is one of the main parts of a Graphic deisgners job, but I will also be seriously considering making this website official once it has been polished as my research has convinced me and shown me the lack of acknoledgement for tradtional design!

I've attached a video of the website on to another blog but the quality transffered poorly!
